The Hermitage - Ossian's Hall |
| Description: |
The Hermitage is an area of outstanding woodland alongside the River Braan near Dunkeld, owned by the
National Trust for Scotland. There
are massive fir trees, the largest in Scotland, and this splendid folly, Ossian's Hall, which was built in 1758.
Inside, the crashing waters of the nearby waterfall are amazingly amplified.

The Hermitage - Ossian's Hall |
| Description: |
Ossian's Hall was originally a summerhouse for the Dukes of Atholl which was later converted
into an elaborate visitor attraction in 1782. Guests would enter the
dark building and view a life-sized painting of Ossian which separated them from the
sound of the waterfall. By pulling a secret pulley the painting was slid into a recess in the
wall and the full force of the waterfall was revealed. Specially positioned mirrors were designed
to give the impression of water rushing towards the alarmed guests when the full beauty of the
inner chamber was uncovered. Many distinguised visitors were subjected to this experience including
Queen Victoria, Turner, Mendelssohn and Wordsworth.
