Description: Bothwell Castle is the largest 13th century castle in Scotland although most of the building dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. Its current state is testament to the many battles raged around its defences. The castle occupies a strategic site on the River Clyde near Uddingston. In the care of Historic Scotland. Orignally the main seat of the 'Black' Douglases until their downfall in 1455 it became the property of the 'Red' Douglases in 1492.
