Introduction to the Lothians
The Lothians (West, Mid and East) surround Edinburgh and are a complete contrast to the capital. Famous
houses ring the city, such as Newhailes in Musselburgh, shown right, whilst the countryside meets the Borders
at the Pentland Hills and the coast meets the Firth of Forth in the west and the North Sea to the east.

Where the Firth of Forth meets the North Sea at North Berwick, the great Bass Rock, shown left, marks the
entrance to the Firth. To the west of Edinburgh are the famous Forth Bridges and, at Linlithgow, a former
Royal Palace.
