Introduction to Dumfries & Galloway
|
|
The Dumfries & Galloway area in the deep south west is renowned for its peaceful natural
surroundings and its many historic castles, museums and gardens. The castle of Drumlanrig,
shown right, combines all of these in one destination. The main towns in the region are
Dumfries itself and Stranraer, a major ferry port to Northern Ireland.

The Solway Firth separates Dumfries & Galloway from England and provides a long south
facing coastline with its sandy beaches and rugged cliffs. At the western coast, nestling
on the Irish sea, are pretty villages and towns, such as Portpatrick.
